Nigeria Edge Ghana 3-2 to Revive African Volleyball Championship Campaign

Posted : 27 August 2026

Nigeria secured their first victory at the 2026 African Women’s Volleyball Championship on Wednesday after edging Ghana 3-2 in a tense Group C encounter at the Ulinzi Indoor Arena in Nairobi. The Nigerian side recovered from their 3-1 defeat to Tunisia on the opening day and kept their hopes of reaching the next stage alive.

Nigeria won the opening set 25-21 and appeared to have the early advantage. Ghana responded with a 25-21 win in the second set before Nigeria regained control with a dominant 25-11 victory in the third.

Ghana refused to collapse and forced the match into a deciding set. The West Africans won the fourth set 25-11, setting up a dramatic finish. Nigeria eventually held their nerve in the fifth set to win 18-16 and complete the 3-2 victory.

Outside hitter Ijoma Elizabeth played an important role for Nigeria, while the team's middle blockers also made crucial contributions at the net during key periods of the contest. The victory was particularly important after Nigeria had opened their campaign with a 3-1 loss to Tunisia on Tuesday.

Head coach Elishama Elam praised the team's fighting spirit after the victory. He said the win was important because Nigeria needed the result to remain in contention for progression, while urging his players to show the same determination against Cameroon.

Nigeria entered the tournament under Elam, who was appointed head coach of the senior women's team by the Nigeria Volleyball Federation in June. The team travelled to Kenya with a 12-player squad and hopes of making an impact in a competition that also carries qualification implications for the 2027 FIVB Women's World Championship and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The result leaves Nigeria third in Group C with two points from two matches, behind Cameroon and Tunisia. Cameroon defeated Tunisia 3-0 on Wednesday, while Cameroon had earlier beaten Ghana 3-0 in the opening round.

Nigeria will face Cameroon in their final Group C match on Thursday, August 27. The match will be crucial for Nigeria's hopes of advancing from the group as the team seeks another strong performance after its hard-fought victory over Ghana.
