Nigeria Edge Angola, Algeria to Claim Top Spot in Group C

Nigeria’s Under-20 men’s handball team have secured top spot in Group C of the 33rd Africa Men’s Junior Handball Championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, after closing out the preliminary round with a commanding 50–17 victory over Madagascar.

The result against Madagascar proved decisive in a tightly contested group, with Nigeria, Angola and Algeria all finishing on four points.

Nigeria, however, emerged as group winners on goal difference after Algeria defeated Angola 25–22 in the other decisive encounter.

The Nigerian youngsters had already put themselves in a strong position before the final round, but their 33-goal victory over Madagascar ultimately gave them the edge over their closest rivals.

Nigeria led 21–8 at half-time before stepping up their attacking intensity after the break to complete one of their biggest victories of the tournament.

They finished the group stage with 98 goals scored and 64 conceded, giving them a superior goal difference of +34.

Angola, despite losing to Algeria, finished second with a +33 goal difference, while Algeria took third place with +29.

Madagascar ended the campaign at the bottom of the group without a point after suffering three consecutive defeats.

With the group stage now behind them, Nigeria will turn their attention to the knockout phase, where they are scheduled to meet Rwanda in the quarter-final.

The Nigerians will be seeking another strong performance against Rwanda as they target a place in the semi-finals and continue their quest for continental honours.
