Nigeria Edge Algeria to Revive Knockout Hopes at Africa Youth Handball Championship

Nigeria’s U-18 Men’s Handball team kept their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage alive with a hard-fought 26–25 victory over Algeria at the 22nd Africa Men’s Youth Handball Championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The Nigerian side, coached by Abdulhakim Yakubu, produced a determined performance to claim their first win of the championship in a contest that remained finely balanced for most of the encounter.

Neither team was able to establish a clear advantage in the opening half, with Nigeria and Algeria going into the interval level at 11–11.

Nigeria returned from the break with greater attacking intensity while also showing resilience as Algeria continued to apply pressure.

The game went down to the wire, with the Nigerian players keeping their composure in the decisive moments to secure the one-goal victory.

Akibu Muhammad was instrumental in Nigeria’s performance and was subsequently named the Most Valuable Player of the match.

The victory earned Nigeria two valuable points in Group B and provided a timely boost to their campaign ahead of their final group-stage fixture against Madagascar.

The Nigerian team will now look to build on the result against Algeria as they pursue qualification for the knockout phase of the championship.
