Nigeria Dominates 2026 African Weightlifting Championships With 10 Gold Medals

Posted : 15 May 2026

Nigeria has established total dominance at the ongoing 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championships in Ismailia, Egypt. After just two days of fierce competition, the Nigerian contingent has amassed an outstanding total of 10 gold and five silver medals. This event is vital as it serves as a primary qualification route for the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The country’s female lifters have been particularly impressive, delivering clean sweeps across multiple weight categories.

Ruth Nyong Asuquo set the pace in the women's 48kg category with a flawless performance. She claimed gold in the snatch, clean and jerk, and the overall total to secure a hat-trick of titles. Asuquo recorded a 74kg lift in the snatch and followed it with 93kg in the clean and jerk. Her combined total of 167kg left her well ahead of her rivals from Madagascar and Tunisia.

The golden run continued in the women's 53kg division through the efforts of Onome Omolola Didih. She mirrored the success of her teammate by securing all three available gold medals in her weight class. Didih successfully lifted 87kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk for a 192kg total. Rafiat Afolashade Lawal also maintained the high standard by completing another clean sweep in the 58kg category.

Nigeria’s male lifters also contributed to the impressive medal tally during the second day of hostilities. Favour Omovigho Agboro secured a gold medal in the clean and jerk within the men's 65kg category. He added two silver medals to his name in the snatch and the combined total segments. Egypt’s Mohamed Noureldin won the overall gold, but Agboro's resilience earned Nigeria crucial points in the standings.

Further success came from Ruth Ayodele in the women's 63kg division, where she earned three silver medals. She pushed Tunisia’s Chaina Rahmouni to the limit, finishing just one kilogram behind in the clean and jerk. These results solidify Nigeria's position as the powerhouse of African weightlifting as the tournament progresses. The team remains focused on maintaining this momentum to secure maximum qualification slots for Glasgow.
