Nigeria defeat Burkina Faso, maintain winning run at IHF Women’s Trophy

Nigeria’s Senior Women’s Handball team maintained their perfect start at the inaugural IHF Women’s Nations Trophy Africa Zone III after defeating hosts Burkina Faso 33-25 in Ouagadougou on Friday.

The victory, Nigeria’s second in as many matches, strengthened their position at the top of Group A and moved them closer to securing a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Playing before a home crowd at the Palais des Sports de Ouaga 2000, Burkina Faso gave Nigeria a stern test in the opening half, with the Nigerian side taking a slender 14-13 lead into the interval.

Coach Michael Taangahar’s charges, however, returned from the break with renewed intensity and gradually took control of the contest.

Nigeria’s improved defensive organisation and attacking efficiency enabled them to pull away from the hosts, eventually securing an eight-goal victory.

Sadiya Musa led the Nigerian scoring charts with six goals, while Wuraola Nuhu, Kirman Haruna, Rachael Ovetuo, Daina Saaloo and Grace Ahaemefula added four goals each.

Balikisu Muhammed also produced an influential display, contributing four goals and earning the Most Valuable Player award for her performance.

The result comes less than 24 hours after Nigeria opened their campaign with an emphatic 39-18 victory over Ghana, underlining their strong attacking form in the tournament.

With two wins from two matches, Nigeria are now firmly positioned for qualification from the three-team Group A, where the top two teams will advance to the semi-finals.

Beyond the immediate objective of reaching the last four, Nigeria also have a major prize within sight. The Zone III champions will secure qualification for the 2026 CAHB African Women’s Handball Championship.

Taangahar’s team will therefore be aiming to maintain their momentum as the competition progresses, with their combination of attacking depth and growing defensive confidence making them strong contenders for the Zone III title.
