Nigeria Complete Golden Double at Beach Volleyball Zone 3 Championship

Posted : 07 July 2026

Nigeria completed a clean sweep of the 2026 African Nations Cup Beach Volleyball Zone 3 Championship, winning both the men's and women's titles after a thrilling final day in Badagry, Lagos State.

The men's team produced a spirited comeback to defeat Ghana 2-1 in a pulsating final, while the women's team capped an unbeaten campaign to emerge champions and seal a memorable double for the host nation.

Nigeria's men recovered from losing the opening set 22-20 to bounce back impressively before a passionate home crowd.

The hosts dominated the second set 21-14 to force a decisive Golden Set, where they held their nerve to edge Ghana 15-13 and secure the championship.

The victory ensured Team Nigeria I remained unbeaten throughout the six-nation tournament despite facing their toughest test in the final.

Nigeria's second men's team, however, missed out on the medals after losing 21-16, 23-21 to Ghana II.

In the third-place match, Niger Republic defeated Benin Republic 15-7 in the Golden Set to claim the bronze medal.

Nigeria's women also enjoyed an outstanding campaign, finishing unbeaten to lift the gold medal.

Ghana settled for silver, while Côte d'Ivoire claimed the bronze medal.

Speaking after the tournament, Mahaman Hadi of the Niger Republic Ministry of Sports praised the organisation of the championship and the choice of Badagry as the host.

"The organisers have chosen the best place for us to have this competition, and it is commendable.

"We would have loved to have the same scenery and facilities in my country, but we do not have a beach," Hadi said.

He also commended his country's performance despite narrowly missing out on a place in the men's final.

"Our team performed up to the required standard, and I am happy with the way things turned out for my team," he said.

The championship featured six countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Niger Republic, Benin Republic and Liberia, with Nigeria's dominance in both events highlighting the country's growing status as a beach volleyball powerhouse in the West African region.

Nigeria's double triumph underlined the country's continued progress in beach volleyball and rewarded the hosts with a memorable performance on home sand. The victories also provide a strong platform as Nigeria looks to build on its growing reputation in continental beach volleyball.
