The thriller kept fans on edge as Nigeria halted Uganda's six-game winning streak, denying the defending champions a clean sweep of the group stage.
Uganda won the toss and chose to field at the Gahanga A Oval. Nigeria’s all-rounder Kehinde Amusa once again shone with the bat, scoring 33 runs off 54 balls. She was supported by Salome Sunday, who contributed 14 runs off 25 balls. However, the rest of the Nigerian batting lineup failed to make significant contributions. Nigeria managed 73/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Uganda began their chase steadily and looked comfortable until the final overs, when the Nigerian bowlers tightened their grip. With just 6 runs needed from 12 balls and four wickets in hand, the momentum seemed to favor Uganda.
But in a dramatic turn, Nigeria’s Lillian Ude bowled a maiden wicket over, swinging the match in her team’s favor. In the final over, Anointed Akhigbe delivered a stunning performance, taking three wickets to bowl out Uganda for 68 runs.
Nigeria clinched a memorable 5-run victory.
After the match, Nigerian captain Favour Eseigbe praised her team’s resilience:
“We had a low total to defend, and at some point, the game seemed to be slipping away. I told my players, ‘He who is down should not be afraid of falling.’ We had nothing to lose, so we stuck to the basics, and the result came in our favor.”
Ugandan captain Janet Mbabazi congratulated Nigeria and promised a comeback:
“I felt it was a chaseable target, but sometimes things don’t go your way. I congratulate Nigeria and assure our fans that we’ll be back stronger.”
Now in its 11th edition, the Kwibuka Tournament features nine participating teams and commemorates the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
