Nigeria Beat Mali to Finish Ninth at African Women’s Volleyball Championship

Posted : 03 September 2026

Nigeria’s senior women’s volleyball team finished ninth at the 2026 African Senior Women’s Volleyball Nations Championship after defeating Mali 3-0 in their final classification match in Nairobi, Kenya. The Nigerian side delivered a strong performance to close their continental campaign with a victory.

Nigeria controlled the match from the opening set but had to work hard for the first point. They edged Mali 25-23 before producing a more convincing display in the second set, which they won 25-19.

The Nigerian team continued to dominate in the third set. They pulled away from their opponents to secure a commanding 25-14 victory and completed a straight-sets win.

The match was the classification contest for ninth and 10th positions at the championship. Nigeria’s victory confirmed a ninth-place finish, while Mali ended the tournament in 10th position.

The result also gave Nigeria a strong finish after a difficult opening phase of the competition. The team finished fourth in their group after recording a victory over Ghana and suffering defeats against Cameroon and Tunisia.

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the latter stages were ended by hosts and defending champions Kenya in the Round of 16. The Nigerian team responded positively in the classification matches, defeating Senegal before overcoming the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mali.

The victory over Mali was Nigeria’s third successive win in the classification bracket. It also provided a positive ending for a squad that included seven debutants at the continental championship.

Nigeria entered the tournament as CAVB Zone 3 champions and competed against some of the continent’s leading volleyball nations in Nairobi. The team will take encouragement from its ability to recover after the Round of 16 setback and finish inside the top 10.

The championship is being staged in Nairobi, with the competition bringing together leading women’s volleyball teams from across Africa. Nigeria’s ninth-place finish gives the team a solid platform to build on ahead of future continental competitions.
