Team Nigeria has made an encouraging start at the ongoing African Open Para-Powerlifting Championship in Oran, Algeria, winning three medals after the conclusion of Day Two events.
Leading the charge for Nigeria was Ogundolie Tolulope, who produced an outstanding display in the women’s 45kg category to secure the gold medal ahead of strong continental rivals.
In the women’s 55kg event, Oyema Esther added to Nigeria’s medal haul with a silver medal performance after showing determination and composure throughout the competition.
Nigeria also recorded success in the men’s 54kg category, where Ezuruike Roland claimed bronze following a spirited outing against a competitive field.
Reacting to the team’s performances, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, commended the athletes for their impressive start to the championship.
According to Olopade, the results achieved so far confirm Nigeria’s continued strength in para-powerlifting across Africa.
He stated that the athletes’ performances reflect the renewed commitment of the Federal Government towards sports development and athlete support.
The NSC boss also urged the Nigerian contingent to remain focused and disciplined as the championship progresses, expressing optimism that more medals would come for the country before the end of the competition.
Team Nigeria is participating in the championship with a 13-member squad competing against athletes from over 23 countries in the tournament scheduled to run from May 18 to May 25 in Oran, Algeria.
These opening performances set a positive trajectory for the rest of the continental event. The collective results highlight the determination of the traveling delegation to maintain dominance on the African stage. With several days of competition remaining, the contingent looks well-positioned to expand its medal tally significantly.
