Posted : 03 June 2026

Nigeria delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 Africa Taekwondo Championship in Bamako, Mali, finishing the four-day competition with a total of seven medals.

The Nigerian contingent secured three gold, one silver, and three bronze medals to underline the country's growing stature in African taekwondo.

The gold medals were won by Ability Mathew Udom in the Para category, Haruna Usman in Poomsae, and Aderibigbe Faridah in Kyorugi (sparring). Joel Jordan, Chidinma Okoko, and Salaudeen Abdulazeez contributed the bronze medals, while the nation's lone silver medal came through the combined Poomsae effort of Abdulafeez and Faridah.

Reacting to the team's success, President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Ms. Temitayo Kuburat Popoola, praised the athletes, coaches, and support staff for their dedication and determination throughout the championship.

She noted that the outstanding performance reflects the hard work and resilience of everyone involved in representing Nigeria on the continental stage.

In a statement, the federation's leadership congratulated the medal-winning athletes and technical crew for once again showcasing Nigeria's strength and competitiveness in African taekwondo.

The federation also expressed gratitude to the National Sports Commission, stakeholders, and supporters whose contributions helped make the campaign successful.

According to the federation, the achievement will serve as added motivation to continue developing the sport and building on recent successes.

Nigeria competed at the championship with a team of 11 athletes and two coaches, returning home with seven medals. The delegation is expected back in the country on Wednesday aboard an Asky Airlines flight scheduled to arrive at 6 p.m. Nigerian time.

This continental triumph underscores the potential of Nigerian taekwondo on the international stage. With continued administrative support and focused development, the athletes are well-positioned for future international tournaments. The federation remains committed to sustaining this momentum and elevating the sport to greater heights.
