Nigeria has launched a significant grassroots sports initiative by partnering with the National Football League and Browns Nigeria to develop flag football nationwide. The project is officially named "One Ball. One Flag. One Future" and is led by the Nigeria American Football Association. Organizers will unveil the details of the campaign on Wednesday during a formal ceremony scheduled to take place in Lagos.
The main target of the development drive involves the wide distribution of modern sports equipment to various communities. NAFA confirmed that it will hand out 2,000 standard footballs alongside 5,000 specialized flag kits to different academic institutions and local community groups. This distribution aims to build a sustainable athletic pathway and increase early entry into the non-contact version of American football.
The program aims to develop important life skills such as individual leadership, discipline, confidence, and mutual teamwork among school children. NAFA Chief Executive Officer Babajide Akeredolu explained that the movement provides real possibilities for children nationwide to find sports opportunities. He noted that every flag and ball represents a chance for youth to dream bigger and secure better futures.
Flag football is experiencing immense international growth as the sport prepares for its official Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The upcoming Olympic inclusion has notably accelerated global investments into youth structures and grassroots development campaigns across Africa. NAFA intends to build a lasting framework by integrating the game deeply into primary, secondary, and tertiary education levels.
The national rollout features multiple distinct participation structures designed to capture diverse student demographics. These setups include the K-12 Flag Football Development Scheme, the Nigeria Secondary School Flag Football League, and the collegiate variant. Furthermore, the specialized Gridiron Gems Girls Development Initiative will specifically focus on boosting female participation numbers and ensuring gender inclusion in the sport.
