Nigeria, Ghana Renew Rivalry in International Rugby Friendly

Posted : 28 October 2025
The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) has announced a friendly match against Ghana, tagged “The Heritage Cup”

The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) has unveiled plans for an international friendly match against Ghana, signalling an active start to its new administration.

Re-elected NRFF President Ademola Are made the announcement through the federation’s Director of Communications, Tolu Oguntimehin, in Abuja. According to the statement, the much-anticipated fixture, tagged “The Heritage Cup,” will be held at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium in Accra, reviving the historic rivalry between the two West African nations.

“The high-profile encounter promises to be intense, with national pride and bragging rights on the line,” the statement read. It also confirmed that the match would serve as the new board’s first official engagement following the NRFF elections held on October 25.

Are explained that the friendly match is part of the federation’s broader plan to maintain player activity and build competitive momentum ahead of the upcoming rugby season. “This match is part of our strategy to keep players engaged while finalising arrangements for the league’s kickoff,” he noted.

He further emphasised the NRFF’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that every geopolitical zone across Nigeria is represented and actively involved in the sport’s growth.

The president also reaffirmed the federation’s dedication to developing women’s rugby, describing it as a vital part of its long-term agenda. “The Rugby Rising Initiative provides a strong foundation to bring more women into the sport and strengthen the female league in the future,” he said.

Are added that Nigeria will host the Africa Regional Women’s Sevens in 2026, an event expected to attract teams from across West Africa. “The championship will further highlight Nigeria’s growing influence and leadership in continental rugby,” he concluded.
