Nico Echavarria Claims PGA Tour Victory as Shane Lowry Falters at Cognizant Classic

Posted : 02 March 2026

Ireland’s Shane Lowry suffered a heartbreaking finish at the PGA Tour Cognizant Classic on Sunday, as two late double bogeys allowed Colombia’s Nico Echavarria to claim victory. The 2019 British Open champion had been in strong form, producing an eagle and four birdies through the first 13 holes and leading by three through 15.

However, mistakes on the 16th and 17th holes derailed his charge, allowing Echavarria, who completed a bogey-free weekend, to secure his third PGA Tour title.

Lowry, reflecting on the collapse, admitted his frustration: “I had the tournament in my hands, and I threw it away. That’s twice this year now.” Despite recovering with a six on the 16th to remain one ahead, Echavarria’s timely birdie at 17 and Lowry’s errant tee shot shifted the lead decisively.

A final bunker mishap on the par-five 18th ended Lowry’s hopes of forcing a playoff, leaving him tied for second at 15-under-par 269 alongside Smotherman and Taylor Moore.

Meanwhile, five-time major winner Brooks Koepka, making his third start since returning from the LIV Golf league, carded a final-round 65 to finish tied for ninth.

Koepka credited a putting adjustment for his improved performance and expressed confidence ahead of the Players Championship in March, noting that the return to PGA competition feels increasingly routine.

The Cognizant Classic highlighted the unpredictability of golf, with Lowry’s late errors contrasting sharply with Echavarria’s steady play, emphasizing the mental resilience required to close out a PGA Tour event.
