Nico Denz Triumphs on Stage 18 as Isaac del Toro Holds Pink Jersey at Giro d’Italia

Posted : 30 May 2025

Nico Denz delivered a standout performance by winning stage 18 of the Giro d’Italia, while Isaac del Toro held onto the coveted pink jersey as overall leader. Denz, riding for Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe, broke away with a group of 11 riders and surged ahead with 11 kilometers left in the 144km stage from Morbegno to Cesano Maderno.

The 31-year-old German maintained his lead to finish a full minute ahead of the main peloton, marking his third career Giro stage victory and his team’s first win of this year’s race following the withdrawal of pre-race favorite Primoz Roglic.

Denz described the win as one of the most emotional of his career, reflecting on the setbacks the team faced this season. After losing key rider Jai Hindley early on and watching Roglic exit the race due to a crash on stage 16, the team had seemed destined for disappointment.

Denz recalled the extensive preparation, including months away from home and altitude training, which had felt wasted after Roglic’s crash. Yet, the stage win offered a rewarding turnaround for both him and his team.

Meanwhile, Isaac del Toro of UAE Team Emirates-XRG maintained his overall lead with just three stages to go, holding a 41-second advantage over Richard Carapaz. However, his teammate Juan Ayuso was forced to withdraw after suffering an allergic reaction to a bee sting during stage 17.

Despite medical advice to skip stage 18, Ayuso attempted to start but ultimately had to abandon after about an hour. He expressed his determination to support the team despite the challenges, highlighting the physical toll the race has taken.
