Nelly Korda withdraws from LA Championship due to exhaustion after fifth consecutive victory

Posted : 23 April 2024

Nelly Korda, the world's number one female golfer, made headlines by withdrawing from the LPGA's LA Championship due to exhaustion following her remarkable fifth consecutive victory and second major win. Her latest triumph at the Chevron Championship in suburban Houston on Sunday saw her match the tour record alongside legends Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez, a feat that left her feeling overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from fans.

In a statement shared on social media, Korda expressed her gratitude for the love and encouragement she received but announced her decision to withdraw from the upcoming LA Championship after careful consideration with her team. Despite her desire to continue competing, Korda acknowledged the toll of her recent hectic schedule, which included winning the Drive On Championship in January and securing four victories in just five weeks, with minimal rest during the LPGA's break coinciding with the Masters tournament.

Acknowledging the difficulty of her decision, Korda emphasized the physical and mental challenges she faced, particularly after the grueling week at the Chevron Championship. Recognizing the importance of listening to her body, she opted for much-needed rest to ensure she remains prepared for the upcoming events in the 2024 season. Korda highlighted her commitment to maintaining her peak performance throughout the year, indicating her intention to return to competition at the LPGA Founders Cup in Clifton, New Jersey, scheduled for May 9-12.

Looking ahead, Korda expressed anticipation for reuniting with fans and fellow competitors at the upcoming tournament in New Jersey, where she aims to continue her extraordinary run and potentially set a new record with a sixth consecutive victory. Her decision to prioritize rest underscores the physical demands of professional golf and the importance of self-care in sustaining top-level performance over a grueling season.
