World No. 1 Nelly Korda secured a dramatic victory at the US Women’s Open on Sunday, claiming her first title at the prestigious tournament with a nervy finish at Riviera Country Club.
Korda carded a two-under-par 69 to finish on eight-under 276, edging England’s Charley Hull and Mexico’s Gaby Lopez by a single shot. The win marked her fourth major championship and her second of the season after triumphing at the Chevron Championship in April.
The American star showed remarkable composure under pressure, sinking a crucial birdie putt on the 17th hole to take control of the leaderboard. She then faced a tense moment on the final green, where a short par putt rolled around the edge of the cup before finally dropping to secure victory.
Korda admitted afterwards that the closing moments were emotionally draining, describing the experience as surreal and overwhelming as she celebrated her long-awaited US Open breakthrough.
The 27-year-old had previously struggled at her national Open, with multiple missed cuts and near-misses, making this victory particularly meaningful. She also revealed that the tournament tested her patience and resilience, as she battled through a demanding week in difficult conditions.
Hull mounted a strong challenge, posting a final-round 67 to finish on seven-under 277. Despite birdies on the 17th and a crucial par save on the 18th, she was forced to settle for her fifth runner-up finish in a major championship.
Lopez also impressed with a closing 68 to briefly share the clubhouse lead, while South Korea’s Chun In-gee finished fourth after a late stumble despite briefly leading on the back nine.
Korda’s victory capped off a gripping finale filled with momentum swings and pressure moments, as she finally added the US Women’s Open trophy to her growing list of achievements.
