Nelly Korda Leads Chevron Championship After Bogey-Free Opening Round

Posted : 24 April 2026

World number two Nelly Korda made a strong start at the LPGA Chevron Championship, carding a flawless seven-under-par 65 to take a two-shot lead after the opening round in Houston. The American, who is chasing her second Chevron title in three years, closed her round with birdies in the final stretch to set the early pace.

Korda, 27, handled challenging wind conditions at Memorial Park with precision, staying composed throughout her round. She noted that controlling distance and selecting the right shots was key on a course that demands accuracy rather than aggression.

Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit and South Korea’s Lee So-mi sit tied for second after both opened with 67s. A group including China’s Liu Yan, Japan’s Yuri Yoshida, France’s Pauline Roussin-Bouchard, and American amateur Farah O’Keefe share fourth place after solid 68s.

Korda’s round was her first bogey-free effort since 2024 and continues a strong season that already includes a win at the season-opening Tournament of Champions along with multiple runner-up finishes. She emphasized the importance of positioning off the tee, noting that approach shots are the most decisive factor on the course.

Tavatanakit, who won this major in 2021, also impressed with a clean opening round, highlighting her ability to recover from imperfect shots while staying focused on scoring rather than perfection. Meanwhile, Lee credited improvements in her mental approach and putting preparation for her strong start.

Elsewhere, world number one Jeeno Thitikul struggled on day one, opening with a four-over 74 as she searches for her first major victory.
