Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz Set Solheim Cup Record as US and Europe Share Opening Session

World No. 1 Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz made Solheim Cup history on Friday by recording their fifth consecutive victory as a partnership, helping the United States and Europe finish the opening foursomes session level.

The American duo faced Europe’s highly ranked pairing of Charley Hull and Solheim Cup debutant Lottie Woad in the first match. Woad immediately delighted the home crowd by sinking the opening putt, but the US responded quickly and moved ahead after Corpuz produced a superb chip at the fifth.

Korda then extended the advantage with a confident putt at the sixth, while Hull struggled to find her rhythm off the tee. The Americans continued to dominate and were five holes ahead with five remaining after Europe failed to recover from another difficult position at the 13th.

Hull reduced the deficit with a composed putt on the 14th, but the comeback never materialised. Corpuz completed a 4&3 victory with a tap-in, securing a record fifth successive win alongside Korda.

The result moved Korda and Corpuz level with Europe’s Alison Nicholas and Laura Davies for the most points won by a Solheim Cup pairing. However, the Americans became the first partnership in the competition’s history to win five matches consecutively.

Corpuz joked about the benefit of playing alongside Korda, saying the world No. 1’s driving often leaves her around 30 yards closer to the green than she would be on her own.

Korda, meanwhile, acknowledged that there was still plenty of work ahead for the United States despite the strong start, saying it was encouraging to see some red figures on the leaderboard.

Elsewhere, Alison Lee and Lauren Coughlin secured a comfortable 3&2 victory over Nanna Koerstz Madsen and Celine Boutier. Europe responded in the third match, with Esther Henseleit and Leona Maguire edging Andrea Lee and Lindy Duncan 1-up after the only contest to reach the 18th hole.

Maja Stark and Linn Grant then delivered Europe’s first point, defeating Rose Zhang and Jennifer Kupcho 3&2. Grant produced one of the session’s standout moments with a remarkable bunker chip that dropped directly into the hole at the ninth.

The opening session ended all square, a result seen only twice in the previous 19 editions of the Solheim Cup. The United States are chasing their first victory on European soil since 2015 and currently lead the overall series 11-7.

Friday’s foursomes will be followed by fourballs later in the day, with another eight points available across foursomes and fourballs on Saturday. The competition will conclude with 12 singles matches on Sunday.

The European team enjoyed passionate support at Bernardus Golf, with the Dutch crowd embracing the tournament despite persistent drizzle. Fans in colourful outfits sang and danced around the first tee, while a banner declaring “Dutch courage, European glory” captured the mood as the Netherlands hosted its first Solheim Cup.
