All preparations are now complete for the 5th edition of the Edo Female Cricket League and the celebration of the 2025 International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Week in Benin City. The events will feature the Women’s Legacy and Mass Participation Programme, designed to honor and promote women in cricket.
The opening ceremony for the league and ICC Women’s Legacy and Mass Participation Programme will take place at the Centre of Excellence for Women’s Cricket, Iyoba College, Ugbowo, Benin City.
Abraham Oviawe, Vice Chairman of the Edo State Cricket Association (ESCA) and Chairman of the League Committee, stated that the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation and Chairman of ESCA, Uyi Akpata, has fully endorsed the state association in hosting the ICC Women’s Week Celebration and the league.
The draw for the Women’s Cricket League has been completed, with Adolor Amazons CC set to face Ekpoma Supernova CC in the opening match scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the Centre of Excellence for Women’s Cricket, Iyoba College. The match will kick off at 12:00 noon.
The league features four teams with rich historical ties to Edo State: Idia Royals CC, Adolor Amazons CC, Emotan Queens CC, and Ekpoma Supernova CC. Matches are expected to conclude on Sunday, October 19, 2025, with games also being played at the High Performance Centre, Edo Boys High School, Ugbowo, Benin City.
Speaking on the concept of cricket legacy, Theophilus Ibodeme, coach and high-performance manager of ESCA, highlighted that a player’s achievements — including major tournament wins, record-breaking performances, and demonstrations of skill and leadership — are key considerations.
He further emphasized that a player’s character, both on and off the field, as well as sportsmanship, mentoring of younger players, community engagement, and contributions to social causes, are essential elements of cricket legacy. These aspects will be discussed in detail by facilitators during the Women’s Legacy and Mass Participation Programme.
