Speaking in Lagos, Orbih highlighted the ongoing development of young talent, particularly through grassroots initiatives, as a key driver of the federation’s long-term strategy.
“We are discovering and nurturing new talents every day. Our commitment to grassroots development is beginning to yield results,” he said.
Orbih noted that several national and regional championships have been organized specifically to identify junior players who can eventually step into the shoes of Nigeria’s current elite athletes.
He pointed to the success of Anuoluwapo Opeyori, Africa’s No. 1 ranked player, who recently won his fifth African Championship title, including four consecutive victories. In his latest triumph, Opeyori defeated Egypt’s top seed, Adham Hatem Elgamal, in a thrilling final.
“It hasn’t been easy, it’s like squeezing water from a stone. But we now make sure our best players consistently compete internationally,” Orbih added.
The federation president also praised Eniola Bolaji, who is currently ranked world No. 2 in her para-badminton category. She became the first African to win a Paralympic bronze medal and has won multiple gold medals in 2025, including the SL3 category at the Para-Badminton Internationals in Cairo and again in Spain this March.
“We must continue to support and encourage her. That’s why she is currently training in Spain ahead of upcoming competitions,” Orbih noted.
Looking ahead, Orbih said Nigerian players are intensively preparing for major upcoming international tournaments, including the Badminton World Championships and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
He also highlighted the federation’s efforts to strengthen the technical department, which includes investing in coaching education.
“Last year, we trained 13 young coaches who successfully earned their BWF Level 1 coaching certificates. This year, we expect some to move on to Level 2, and eventually Level 3,” he said.
Orbih further revealed plans to recruit a foreign coach on secondment, aimed at boosting the national team’s performance in international competitions.
“We are laying the right foundation now to ensure Nigerian badminton remains competitive on the global stage for years to come.”
