The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) has announced that it will begin implementing the newly introduced bodyweight categories during the 9th National Youth Games (NYG), set to take place in Asaba, Delta State.
Scheduled from August 29 to September 6, 2025, the Youth Games will feature over 30 sporting events, including weightlifting. The NWF on Monday officially notified all coaches, stakeholders, and officials of its decision to adopt the revised weight categories, in line with the latest guidelines issued by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).
Media Officer Amaechi Agbo directed all coaches and state associations to ensure that their athletes registered for the NYG strictly adhere to the new bodyweight categories.
For the weightlifting event at the 2025 NYG, six youth bodyweight classes will be contested—three for boys and three for girls. The updated categories for male athletes are 56kg, 60kg, and 65kg, while the female athletes will compete in the 44kg, 48kg, and 53kg divisions.
