Nasarawa Govt. Set to Construct Olympic-Size Swimming Pool

Posted : 17 February 2026

Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, has announced plans to construct an Olympic-size stadium in Lafia, the State Capital, before the end of his administration.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the grand finale of the 2025 Nasarawa State Governor's Football Cup tournament held on Monday at the Lafia City Stadium, Governor Sule expressed commitment to transforming the State's sports landscape.

"The ultimate goal here is not just to renovate the Lafia City Stadium, but to rebuild the entire facility.

"Our challenge now is that the facility is currently being overburdened with a lot of sporting activities, making it difficult for us to achieve our target on the stadium as quickly as possible.

"However, we have received superior arguments from key stakeholders to do the best we can at the Lafia City Stadium and start a new one from ground zero.

"My administration is already considering constructing a brand-new sporting facility in the State Capital, an Olympic-size Stadium which, we believe, will serve as a crucible for nurturing excellence, empowering our young athletes to scale national and international heights.

"This brand-new stadium is expected to host high-level sporting tournaments, including the National Teams of Nigeria, which will equally attract investments and cement the State's reputation as a hub for sports excellence because our goal is to host world-class sporting events in the State," the Governor disclosed.

Karu Local Government Area thrashed Wamba Local Government Area by 3-0 in the final of the 2025 Governor's Cup Football Tournament, with Ewa Samuel netting twice, and Chinedu Okorie adding the last, to lift the coveted trophy and a Five Million Naira (N5,000,000.00) prize money, while Wamba parted home with Three Million Naira (N3,000,000.00) in prize money.

Keffi Local Government Area scooped the bronze medal in the earlier game after edging out Keana Local Government Area 2-0, with Paul Bako and Shittu Ola each scoring.

Individual award recipients included Maji Amos from Karu (Best Goalkeeper); Paul Bako from Keffi (Highest Goal Scorer); Haruna Abubakar from Karu (Most Valuable Player); while Nasarawa Local Government Area received the Fair-Play award. For his non-stop unique spirit of sportsmanship throughout the tournament, Lafia-based Suleiman Dauda Sani (popularly known as Makalele) was voted 'Fan-of-the-Tournament.'

Thirteen Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State participated in the 2025 edition of the round-robin tournament. The competition is co-hosted annually by the State Football Association in conjunction with the State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, in honour of a sitting Governor.

The occasion was graced by a litany of sports stakeholders, political stalwarts, and enthusiastic spectators from across the State and country, including President of the Nigeria Football Federation cum WAFU-B Supremo, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau; Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, alongside members of the Nasarawa State Executive Council, including Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu; Former Nasarawa State Deputy Governor and Chairman of Nationwide League One, Hon.
