NAqF unveils strong squad ahead of 17th Africa Aquatic Championships

Posted : 01 May 2026

The Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF) has announced its official delegation to the 17th Africa Aquatics Championships scheduled to take place in Oran, Algeria, from May 5th to 10th.

NAqF, through its Media and Communications Assistant, Chukwunonso Arinzechi, disclosed that the 10-member delegation comprises eight swimmers and two officials who will represent the country in the continental competition.

``The Team Nigeria Swimmers include: Colins Obi, Opute Clinton, Ijomoni Anthony, Oka Dorcas, Alfred-Olajide Boluwatife, Ibidapo Michelle, India Kate Brown Hibbert Aviva, and Sophie Olamma.

``The Officials are: Loya Barakumo – Coach and Oriss Taiwo, the Secretary General of NAqF.

``The team features a mix of promising young talents, including 16-year-old India Kate Brown, a UK-based swimmer representing Nigeria at the championships.

``Brown, who trains at Mount Kelly Swim Academy, holds a personal best of 2:22.01 in the 200m butterfly and recently recorded 2:22.60, placing her among the emerging prospects to watch at the competition,'' he said.

Arinzechi added that UK-based Brown's inclusion reflected the growing impact of the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) Invited Diaspora Athletes (IDA) Initiative.

``The IDA initiative is championed by NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade, which is aimed at integrating Nigerian-born and Nigerian-descended athletes abroad into the national sports framework.

``The championships will bring together top swimmers from across Africa, providing a platform for Nigeria’s athletes to compete at the highest level and showcase their abilities.

``The Nigeria Aquatics Federation expresses confidence in the team’s preparedness and commitment as they aim to deliver strong performances in Algeria,'' he concluded.

The 10-member delegation is poised to make a significant impact on the continental stage with a blend of local and diaspora talent. This participation reinforces the federation's dedication to elevated competitive standards and international sports integration.
