Nadine de Klerk hit an unbeaten 37 to guide South Africa to a thrilling three-wicket World Cup win over Bangladesh.
Allrounder Nadine de Klerk played a starring role once again as South Africa’s women’s cricket team secured a dramatic three-wicket victory over Bangladesh at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Monday.
De Klerk hammered an unbeaten 37 off 29 balls, including a decisive six with just three deliveries remaining, following up her heroics against India earlier in the tournament.
Chasing a challenging total of 233, the Proteas found themselves in trouble at 78 for five. However, a resilient 85-run sixth-wicket partnership between Chloe Tryon (62 off 69) and Marizanne Kapp (56 off 71) revived their chances.
Both fell in the closing overs, leaving Masabata Klaas (10*) to support De Klerk in an unbeaten 37-run stand that guided South Africa to victory.
Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt admitted the match was far closer than anticipated but praised the team’s patience and composure.
South Africa’s innings started poorly, with opener Tazmin Brits dismissed for a second consecutive duck, followed by early breakthroughs for Bangladesh. Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch then steadied the innings with a 55-run partnership.
However, a series of run-outs and quick dismissals saw the Proteas stumble to 78 for five, setting the stage for Tryon and Kapp to rebuild the innings. Their efforts took the score past 150, before Klaas and De Klerk held firm under pressure to secure the win.
Earlier, Bangladesh posted 232 for six after choosing to bat, thanks to a sensational late-innings surge by Shorna Akter. The batter struck an unbeaten 51 off 35 balls, including three sixes, to lift her team from a slow start.
Sharmin Akhter (50 off 77) and Ritu Moni (19) also made valuable contributions. Despite restricting Bangladesh to 73 runs in the first 25 overs, the Proteas bowlers struggled in the final 10, allowing 82 runs that set a testing target.
Nonkululeko Mlaba was South Africa’s standout bowler, taking 2 for 42 in 10 overs, while Tryon (1-41) and De Klerk (1-39) also claimed crucial wickets. The match showcased a thrilling contest of resilience, finishing with de Klerk once again emerging as the decisive performer for the Proteas.
