Nadine de Klerk Powers South Africa to Stunning Win Over India in Women’s World Cup

Posted : 10 October 2025

Nadine de Klerk produced a sensational counter-attack from No. 8 to lead South Africa to an extraordinary three-wicket victory against hosts and tournament favourites India at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.

Coming in at 142-6 with just 14 overs remaining, de Klerk smashed an unbeaten 84 off 54 balls, including eight fours and five sixes, and forged a crucial 69-run seventh-wicket partnership with Chloe Tryon, reviving South Africa’s hopes after a precarious 81-5.

Captain Laura Wolvaardt contributed a solid 70 from 111 deliveries to stabilize the innings, while Tryon added a vital 49 from 66 balls, but it was de Klerk’s astonishing batting display that ultimately steered South Africa to an improbable win.

Earlier, India posted 251 all out after a strong innings from wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh, who scored 94 off 77 balls, supported by an 88-run eighth-wicket stand with offspinner Sneh Rana, although South Africa’s spinners Nonkululeko Mlaba and Tryon shared five wickets to keep the hosts in check.

South Africa’s innings began shakily with early dismissals of Tazmin Brits, Sune Luus, Marizanne Kapp, and Anneke Bosch, leaving the Proteas struggling.

A sixth-wicket partnership between Wolvaardt and Tryon briefly offered hope, but the dismissal of Wolvaardt at a critical moment seemed to tilt the game in India’s favour.

Nevertheless, de Klerk’s fearless approach and aggressive stroke play turned the contest on its head, earning praise from Wolvaardt, who called it “one of the best knocks I’ve seen.”

With this remarkable win, South Africa now sits fourth in the Women’s World Cup standings, while India holds third, making the tournament’s middle stage increasingly competitive and unpredictable.
