Morocco Defeat Nigeria 3-2 to Reach African Volleyball Championship Semis

Posted : 22 September 2026

Morocco defeated Nigeria 3-2 in a dramatic quarter-final at the 2026 CAVB Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship in Tunis on Monday, September 21. The result sent Morocco into the semi-finals and ended Nigeria’s hopes of competing for the continental title.

Nigeria made the stronger start at the El Menzah Sports Hall. The West Africans took the opening set 25-20 after establishing early control and moved within four sets of a place in the last four.

Morocco responded strongly in the second set. The North Africans won 25-15 to level the match before taking the third set 25-21. That gave Morocco a 2-1 advantage and left Nigeria needing to win the fourth set to stay in contention.

Nigeria showed resilience under pressure. They edged a tense fourth set 26-24 after a closely fought battle at the net, forcing a deciding fifth set and keeping their semi-final hopes alive.

Morocco held their composure in the final set. They secured a 15-12 victory to complete the 3-2 triumph and book their place in the last four. The five-set result followed Nigeria’s earlier 3-2 victory over Algeria in the competition.

Nigeria had reached the quarter-finals after overcoming Algeria 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 15-12 in their final group-stage match. Morocco had earned their quarter-final place with a 3-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo, winning 25-20, 25-21 and 29-27.

Nigeria’s campaign now moves into the 5th-8th classification stage. The team is scheduled to face Rwanda on Wednesday, September 23, while Ghana will meet Egypt in the other classification fixture. Morocco, meanwhile, will face hosts Tunisia in the semi-finals, with Cameroon taking on Algeria in the other last-four tie.

The championship is being held in Tunis from September 15 to 25, with 16 national teams competing. The African champions will earn a quota place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, while the top three teams will qualify for the 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship in Poland.
