Monrovia 2026 Set to Redefine African Scrabble Championship

Posted : 02 February 2026

African Scrabble is gearing up for an historic championship as preparations for the 16th Africa Scrabble Championship (ASC) accelerate, following Monrovia, Liberia’s confirmation as the host city.

Since the announcement, the Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) and the National Scrabble Association of Liberia (NASAL) have been engaged in meticulous planning, signaling a tournament poised to set new standards for the game on the continent.

From October 21–25, 2026, the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex on Tubman Boulevard will become the epicenter of African Scrabble, welcoming the continent’s sharpest minds for what is being described as the most ambitious edition in the championship’s 32-year history.

PANASA has confirmed that NASAL’s proposed budget for the tournament is the largest ever for an Africa Scrabble Championship. This unprecedented financial commitment has drawn widespread praise across the continent, with African federations applauding Liberia’s bold investment in the sport’s growth.

“This will be a record-breaking championship in every sense,” PANASA officials said, highlighting the budget as transformative for player welfare, tournament organization, and competitive incentives.

For the first time in ASC history, all top 20 finishers will receive cash prizes, a significant expansion from previous editions where only a few players were rewarded. Even more remarkable, the top five prizes will be the largest ever offered, and the eventual champion will earn the richest reward in African Scrabble history.

The incentives extend beyond cash. The top three players will also receive unique, specially designed trophies, adding prestige to podium finishes and elevating the championship’s profile.

In a move promoting inclusivity, registration fees for quota players remain at 2022 rates, despite prize money increasing by up to 100 percent in most categories. This decision underlines the organizers’ commitment to participation and accessibility.

Building on reforms introduced in 2024, the Diaspora Route will once again allow African players living abroad who cannot attend national qualifiers to compete through their home associations. Each country may register up to 15 home-based players, with an additional maximum of five diaspora players, bringing the total possible team size to 20 per nation.

The registration process remains official and streamlined: only Presidents, Chairmen of national associations, or designated Team Captains are authorized to register teams through the tournament portal.

With logistics, visas, accommodation, and travel arrangements already being fine-tuned, PANASA has urged national associations to actively share tournament details with their players. Further information is available on the official tournament page, and inquiries can be directed to Chrispine Okeyo, PANASA Technical Director, or Lester Morris, President of NASAL.

As Africa’s top Scrabble minds begin their countdown to Monrovia 2026, one thing is clear: this championship will not only crown a winner but also redefine the Africa Scrabble Championship and the future of the sport.
