Mokoena Leads Betway Big Easy Tour After Opening Round at Observatory Golf Club

Karabo Mokoena fired a near-perfect six-under-par 66 to take the lead after the opening round of the 10th Betway Big Easy Tour tournament at Observatory Golf Club. The event marks the final tournament of the regular season before the season-ending Playoff in February at Killarney Country Club and The Final in March at The Els, Copperleaf. Mokoena's impressive performance follows a T53 finish at the Sunshine Tour’s Mediclinic Invitational at Heron Banks Estate last week, where he felt he had gained valuable insights to build on during the tournament.

 

Mokoena found success by focusing on keeping the ball on the fairway despite the tight layout of the Observatory course. He credited his improvement in putting, attributing it to focused practice on the greens after struggling with the putter in previous events. Though he faced a setback with a bogey on the 16th hole due to slower greens in the afternoon, he remained unfazed, finishing strong by birdieing the final two holes.

 

The round started with a par on the ninth, followed by seven straight pars before Mokoena’s lone bogey of the day on the 16th. However, he recovered quickly, closing out the round with a solid finish. Mokoena, a member of Modderfontein Golf Club, highlighted the role of his driver in his successful day, mentioning the challenges he faced earlier in the season with an unreliable driver, which he replaced just before his previous tournament.

 

Lwazi Gqira from East London Golf Club trails Mokoena by one stroke, shooting a 67 to sit in second place. Ryan Tipping follows closely with a 68, while a group of five players—Richard Joubert, Christopher Long, Ryan Van Der Klis, Ulrich van den Berg, and England's Thomas Spreadborough—are tied for fourth at three-under-par.
