MOB Championship seeks to reshape Nigeria’s taekwondo talent pipeline

Nigeria’s taekwondo development pathway is set for a fresh boost as the inaugural Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (MOB) National Taekwondo Championship makes its debut in Lagos from September 17.

The competition, sponsored by Opeyemi Bamidele, former Lagos State Commissioner for Sports and Commissioner for Information and Strategy and currently the Senate Leader, is designed to bring together taekwondo athletes from across the country while creating a stronger platform for talent identification and competitive development.

Expected to feature teams from states, clubs and schools, the championship will provide athletes with an opportunity to test themselves against some of the country’s emerging and established talents.

Beyond competition, organisers see the event as a potential talent pipeline capable of helping coaches and officials identify athletes who could eventually represent Nigeria at major continental and global competitions.

President of the Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria, Tayo Popoola, welcomed the initiative, describing private-sector involvement as an important component of efforts to expand the development of the sport.

Popoola said the championship comes at an important time as Nigeria continues to build towards major international competitions, including the African Games and Olympic Games.

“We are so happy about this, and we believe it is coming at a time when we are also working towards the next African Games and the Olympic Games,” he said.

The federation president noted that the maiden edition would provide an important opportunity to assess the progress of athletes while giving coaches and technical officials a broader pool from which to identify future national representatives.

“This is the maiden edition of the competition and we have high expectations that the athletes will enjoy themselves in Lagos. It is an opportunity to continue to look at the progress of our athletes and know those we expect to represent us in future continental and global events,” Popoola added.

The championship has been tagged the “Tournament of Unity”, underlining its wider objective of bringing practitioners of the sport together from different regions and creating greater interaction within the Nigerian taekwondo community.

Unlike competitions where individual entries may dominate participation, Popoola disclosed that the MOB Championship would accept entries strictly in team format.

He said the response from across the country had so far been encouraging, while assuring participants that the federation would work with the organisers to deliver a successful event.

“Participation can only be in team format and I am happy that so far we are having good responses from various parts of the country. The federation will continue to work so hard to make the event hitch-free,” he said.

For Bamidele, whose involvement in sports dates back to his time in the Lagos State government, the championship represents another effort to use sport as a platform for bringing people together and providing young athletes with opportunities to grow.

With athletes expected from states, clubs and schools across Nigeria, the inaugural MOB National Taekwondo Championship could become more than a new competition on the calendar. Its lasting value may ultimately be measured by the talents it discovers, the athletes it develops and the national team prospects it produces.
