Mitchell Starc becomes costliest IPL signing, surpassing Pat Cummins' record

Posted : 19 December 2023

After an absence of eight years, Mitchell Starc has emerged as the costliest signing in IPL history, securing a deal with Kolkata Knight Riders for £2.35 million, surpassing the £1.945 million paid for Pat Cummins by the Hyderabad Sunrisers on the same day. England's Harry Brook was acquired by Delhi Capitals for £380,000, doubling his base price of £190,000. Mitchell Starc's signing with Kolkata Knight Riders for 24.75 crore Indian rupees (£2.35 million) has made him the most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League.

Although Australia captain Pat Cummins had set a record earlier in the auction by joining the Hyderabad Sunrisers for £1.95 million, that record was quickly eclipsed by his compatriot Starc. The acquisitions of Starc and Cummins exceeded the previous record held by Punjab Kings, who paid £1.85 million for England all-rounder Sam Curran in the 2022 auction. The World Cup-winning captain joins fast bowler Travis Head at the Sunrisers, having been signed for just under £650,000.

England's Harry Brook, known for his unbeaten 100 against Kolkata Knight Riders last season, secured a deal with Delhi Capitals for £380,000, a significant reduction from the £1.35 million he was signed for in the previous auction. Chris Woakes, who shared the same base price as Brook, was signed by Punjab Kings for £400,000. Meanwhile, Phil Salt and Australians Steve Smith and Josh Hazlewood went unsold in the initial bidding.

Nine England players were retained for the 2024 season, including Jos Buttler (Rajasthan), Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, and Jonny Bairstow (all Punjab Kings), along with Reece Topley and Will Jacks (both Bangalore). Moeen Ali (Chennai), Jason Roy (Kolkata), and Mark Wood (Lucknow Super Giants) were also retained. Several Australians, including Mitch Marsh, David Warner, Matthew Wade, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Green, and Maxwell, were retained by their franchises before the auction.

West Indies batter Rovman Powell was the first player to be auctioned, joining the Rajasthan Royals. The upcoming 2024 IPL season is set to commence in March.
