Miracle Kingsley Completes Remarkable Comeback With Taekwondo Gold

Posted : 25 September 2026

Team Uyo’s Miracle Kingsley completed a remarkable turnaround at the 2026 Akwa Ibom Sports Festival, overcoming defending champion Divine Kingsley of Itu to win the male -30kg taekwondo gold medal.

The young fighter, who was eliminated in the opening round of last year’s festival, produced a determined display at the Nigerian Christian Institute (NCI), Uyo, on Wednesday to claim the top prize.

The final generated considerable excitement inside the indoor sports hall as both fighters exchanged kicks and counters in a keenly contested encounter.

Miracle survived an early scare before recovering strongly to overturn the defending champion and secure the gold medal.

Divine, who won the event at the 2025 festival, settled for silver, while Joseph Emmanuel of Etinan and Samuel Gideon of Ibesikpo/Asutan took the bronze medals.

The taekwondo competition also produced champions in the individual male and female poomsae events.

William Lemmy secured gold for Nsit Ubium in the male category, finishing ahead of Unwana Emmanuel of Nsit Atai, who won silver. Victor Okpodighi of Itu and Daniel Edet of Ibesikpo/Asutan shared the bronze medals.

In the female individual poomsae, Emediong Effiong of Itu emerged champion, with Blessing Samuel of Ibesikpo/Asutan taking silver.

Mfoniso Idorenyin of Nsit Atai and Hosanna Jackson of Uyo completed the podium with bronze medals.

Presenting medals to the successful athletes on Thursday, Commissioner for Sports Paul Bassey praised the competitors for their courage and competitive spirit.

Bassey said the performances demonstrated the wealth of sporting talent available at the grassroots, stressing the importance of providing young athletes with opportunities to compete and develop their abilities.

He added that the festival would help identify and nurture athletes capable of representing Akwa Ibom and Nigeria at higher levels.

The 2026 Akwa Ibom Sports Festival, themed “Nurturing Talents, Promoting Tourism,” continues across various centres in the state, with athletes from the 31 local government areas competing in 27 sports.

The festival is scheduled to end on Sunday, Sept. 27, at Uyo Township Stadium with a closing ceremony.
