Min Woo Lee Surges Into Tour Championship Lead With Brilliant 62

Posted : 28 August 2026

Australia’s Min Woo Lee produced a stunning opening round at the Tour Championship, firing a bogey-free eight-under-par 62 at East Lake Golf Club to take a two-shot lead. The 28-year-old matched the lowest round of his PGA Tour career and immediately put himself in contention for the FedExCup title and its $10 million winner’s prize.

Lee’s performance was a remarkable turnaround after two disappointing playoff appearances. He had struggled at both the BMW Championship and the previous playoff event, but arrived in Atlanta determined to reset and attack the final tournament of the season with a fresh mindset.

The Australian made eight birdies during his opening round and never dropped a shot. His impressive start came despite an unusual situation, as playing partner J.J. Spaun withdrew because of a shoulder injury early in the round, leaving Lee to complete the remainder of his 18 holes on his own.

Lee’s nearest challengers finished two shots behind on six-under, with Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa and Chris Gotterup all carding 64s. World number one Scottie Scheffler was another stroke back at five-under after a bogey-free 65, keeping himself firmly within striking distance.

Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, opened with a two-under-par 68 to sit six shots behind Lee. Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood was also among the players chasing the leader after beginning with a four-under 66.

Lee entered the season-ending tournament after runner-up finishes at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Scottish Open, which helped secure his place among the 30-player field. The Tour Championship will determine the 2026 FedExCup champion, with the winner also receiving the $10 million first prize.
