The PGA Tour’s early-season stop at The American Express in La Quinta, California produced spectacular scoring on Day 1 as players took advantage of near-perfect desert conditions across the Nicklaus Tournament Course, La Quinta Country Club, and the Pete Dye Stadium Course.
On the Nicklaus Course, Min Woo Lee and Pierceson Coody each carded a brilliant 10‑under‑par 62, sharing the lead heading into Day 2. Their hot starts reflected excellent ball striking and sharp putting, sending a strong message in a competitive field.
Close behind, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler opened with a bogey-free 9‑under‑par 63. Scheffler displayed his usual consistency, making birdies on half of his holes and avoiding major mistakes. His performance kept him within striking distance, one shot back of the leaders, in a chasing pack that also includes notable players such as Patrick Cantlay, Ben Griffin, and Si Woo Kim.
The first round saw several other low scores, with multiple players posting 63s and 64s across the different courses, highlighting how receptive the conditions were under calm desert weather. Jason Day also posted a 63 on the Pete Dye Stadium Course, showing that scoring opportunities extended beyond the main Nicklaus layout.
As Day 2 unfolds, the leaderboard remains tightly packed. Lee and Coody will look to maintain their momentum and extend their advantage, while Scheffler and the group at 9‑under aim to close the gap as the tournament moves toward the weekend. With scoring already low, another sub-65 round could be decisive for those chasing the lead.
With the cut looming and competition fierce, The American Express continues to deliver exciting early-season golf, featuring both established stars and rising talents making their mark in the Desert Swing.
