Mike Makinde Makes History With Third Nigeria Cup Golf Title

Mike Makinde made history by winning the Nigeria Cup for a record third time as the 29th edition of the annual golf tournament ended at Ikoyi Club 1938. The seven-handicap golfer secured the title with a 65-net score, finishing four shots ahead of Anscy Okoebor.

Makinde's latest victory adds to his previous Nigeria Cup triumphs in 2022 and 2023. He missed out to Tayo Babalakin in 2024 and Paul Tijani in 2025 before returning to the top of the competition this year.

His 2026 performance also established a new milestone in the tournament's history. He became the first golfer to win the Nigeria Cup three times, having previously become the first player to successfully defend the title in 2023.

Anscy Okoebor finished second, four shots behind Makinde, while Abiola Johnson took third position. Makinde described the victory as an important moment in his golfing career and credited his success to hard work.

“I consider winning again as an important part of my golfing career. I’m excited and happy with the outcome of this tournament,” Makinde said, while expressing hope of adding more victories in the future.

Akeem Lawal won the men's gross category after carding 75. Calli Udalor finished second with 76, while Peter Eben-Spiff completed the top three.

Adeyosola Ayodele claimed the ladies' net category with a score of 71. Evelyn Oyome won the ladies' gross category at the week-long competition.

Chairman of the 2026 Nigeria Cup Organising Committee, Mohammed Oybo, expressed satisfaction with the tournament's outcome. He thanked the sponsors, organising committee members and participating golfers for their support and commitment to sustaining the event.

The Nigeria Cup was established as an annual tournament to mark Nigeria's Independence anniversary. The competition has grown into a major fixture on the Nigerian golf calendar, bringing together amateur and professional players alongside other participants.
