Michael Valgren produced a dramatic late surge to win his first-ever Grand Tour stage at the Giro d’Italia, completing an emotional comeback story four years after a life-altering crash.
The Danish rider, competing for EF Education-EasyPost, attacked in the closing kilometre of stage 17 and held off his rivals to claim victory after a grueling 202km mountain route to Andalo in the Dolomites. He crossed the line three seconds ahead of Andreas Leknessund, with Damiano Caruso finishing third a further three seconds back.
Overcome with emotion after the finish, Valgren dedicated the victory to his son, revealing that a small model gifted by him had served as a personal lucky charm throughout the race.
Valgren’s triumph marks a significant milestone in his recovery journey following a devastating 2022 crash that left him with multiple serious injuries, including a fractured pelvis and damage to ligaments and knee cartilage. The 34-year-old has since battled back to return to the highest level of professional cycling.
The stage featured a strong breakaway group, with Valgren staying in contention throughout before launching his decisive attack near the final climb. Despite pressure from rivals, he maintained his effort to secure a long-awaited Grand Tour victory.
Meanwhile, Jonas Vingegaard retained the overall race lead comfortably, while Felix Gall and Thymen Arensman remain in pursuit in the general classification standings.
