Michael Thorbjornsen Claims Maiden PGA Tour Title with Rocket Classic Victory

Michael Thorbjornsen captured the first PGA Tour title of his career after producing a flawless final-round 7-under-par 63 to win the 2026 Rocket Classic by two shots at Detroit Golf Club. The 24-year-old American finished at 18-under for the tournament, sealing the victory with a remarkable 26-foot birdie putt on the final hole to complete a memorable breakthrough performance.

Starting the final round three shots behind overnight leader Davis Riley, Thorbjornsen mounted a superb charge as Riley struggled early with four bogeys. A run of four birdies over six holes, including three in a decisive stretch on the back nine, propelled Thorbjornsen to the top of the leaderboard before he capped his round with a clutch birdie on the 18th green. Reflecting on the winning putt, he described it as having the "perfect pace" and "perfect read."

The victory secures Thorbjornsen's place in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, lifting him safely inside the top 70 standings ahead of the regular-season finale at the Wyndham Championship. He also became the eighth first-time winner on the PGA Tour this season and the second in consecutive weeks, following Jackson Koivun's triumph at the 3M Open.

Xander Schauffele finished runner-up after a final-round 65, two strokes behind the champion, while Riley slipped to third following a closing 70. Denmark's Rasmus Højgaard finished fourth at 14-under, with Hideki Matsuyama, Matt Wallace, and Kristoffer Ventura sharing fifth place on 13-under.

The win marks a significant milestone for Thorbjornsen, who turned professional after a successful amateur career and had come close to winning several times this season. His composed display under pressure confirmed his status as one of the PGA Tour's rising stars and provides a timely boost ahead of his maiden FedEx Cup Playoff appearance.
