McIlroy Shifts Focus to PGA Truist Championship After Masters Victory

Posted : 08 May 2025

Rory McIlroy, having secured a career Grand Slam with a win at the Masters and ended a decade-long drought in major championships, is now focused on moving forward, starting with this week’s PGA Truist Championship.

The 36-year-old from Northern Ireland, who has claimed victory at Quail Hollow four times, will face a different challenge this year as the event has been relocated to Philadelphia Cricket Club due to the PGA Championship being held there next week. Despite the change in venue, McIlroy is excited to play at a new course and continue his golfing journey.

McIlroy reflected on the significance of his recent Masters victory, which came after a series of near misses at Augusta National. The win marked the culmination of his career Slam, having previously triumphed in the Open and PGA championships in 2014.

He expressed relief at overcoming the mental barriers that had hindered his pursuit of the Masters, noting that it was more about conquering his mind than his game. McIlroy’s playoff win over Justin Rose was an emotional moment for him, and he’s now eager to move on from that chapter and focus on the future.

After celebrating his Masters win and spending time with family and friends, McIlroy returned to the course, looking forward to getting back into his regular golfing routine. Having spent a few days practicing in Europe and New York, McIlroy is now fully focused on the upcoming PGA Championship. He expressed excitement for the next phase of his career and is ready to take on the challenges ahead with a renewed sense of purpose.

As he prepares for the PGA Truist Championship, McIlroy also took a moment to reflect on his past as a youth cricketer. The layout of the Philadelphia Cricket Club, which has been recently renovated, reminds him of the old-school courses he enjoyed.

McIlroy, who once preferred bowling to batting in cricket, commented on the strategic nature of the course, where the plan is to hit the driver aggressively and navigate from there. Despite the increased challenge of the longer par fours, McIlroy is enjoying the test posed by the new layout and is ready to embrace the opportunity.
