McIlroy, Lowry win Zurich Classic in dramatic playoff finish

Posted : 29 April 2024

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry emerged victorious in the PGA Tour's Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event, clinching a playoff win over Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer. Despite starting the day seven strokes off the lead, Ramey and Trainer surged to the top of the leaderboard with a stellar nine-under-par round of 63 in the foursomes format.

With the pressure mounting to reach the target of 25-under, McIlroy and Lowry, former teammates on the Irish Olympic squad and in the Ryder Cup, were the only duo to achieve the feat. McIlroy's superb chip shot on the final hole set up Lowry for a decisive birdie, forcing a playoff with Ramey and Trainer, who had been waiting off the course for three hours.

In the playoff, Ramey and Trainer faltered on the 18th hole, allowing McIlroy and Lowry to secure victory with steady play. Lowry, who had been struggling on the greens, missed a crucial putt but ultimately clinched the win when Trainer failed to extend the playoff with a missed putt of his own.

For McIlroy, the victory marked his 25th PGA Tour win, while for Lowry, it was his third and his first at a PGA Tour-sanctioned event since his 2019 British Open triumph. Reflecting on their triumph, Lowry emphasized the significance of the win in boosting their positions in the FedEx Cup standings and expressed gratitude for McIlroy's stellar performance throughout the tournament.
