Rory McIlroy fell off the pace at the BMW Championship in St Louis after carding a one-under-par 69 in Friday’s second round.
The Masters champion began the tournament with an impressive six-under-par in the opening round, but could not maintain the same level of performance on Friday.
McIlroy is now five shots behind Wyndham Clark, with whom he shared the lead after the first round.
Clark produced a flawless round to move to 12 under par and leads the tournament by one stroke over Gary Woodland.
The 32-year-old is the only player in the competition without a bogey through the first two rounds.
McIlroy admitted he had not struck the ball as well as he did during his opening round and said he planned to spend time on the driving range ahead of Saturday’s third round.
“I feel like conditions were pretty similar to yesterday,” McIlroy told the Golf Channel after his round.
“The wind was coming out of a different direction, but still very scorable. The greens are soft, maybe the ball’s got a little bit more run out on the fairways, but you’ll still see guys shooting pretty good scores today.
“I didn’t quite hit it as good as I did yesterday, so probably an afternoon on the range for me.
“I’m proud of how I just hung in there. A lot of good par putts on the back nine, especially. The only bogey I had was with a mistake on the par-five eighth hole, but I made some really good par saves coming in and that sort of kept me in it.”
McIlroy will return for the third round on Saturday looking to close the gap on the leaders and remain in contention for the BMW Championship title.
