Mbah, Bawa Secure Nigeria’s Historic Beach Volleyball Ticket to LA 2028

Posted : 23 August 2026

Nigeria’s Esther Onyinye Mbah and Pamela Miyoum Bawa have secured a historic place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games after winning the women’s title at the 2026 African Beach Volleyball Nations Championship in Alexandria, Egypt. The Nigerian pair defeated Morocco 2-0 in the final to claim Africa’s Olympic qualification place.

The victory marked Nigeria’s first qualification for the Olympic beach volleyball event. Mbah and Bawa produced a composed performance in the final, winning the opening set 21-18 before dominating the second 21-10 to complete a memorable continental triumph.

The achievement was particularly significant because the Nigerians had previously lost to the same Moroccan opponents during the group stage. They responded when it mattered most, overturning that setback with a controlled performance in the decisive match.

Mbah and Bawa also showed their strength throughout the championship. Their partnership has developed steadily since they began playing together, with the pair recording 33 victories from 44 matches according to FIVB-linked competition data.

The two athletes have also built experience together at major continental and international events. They won the 2024 CAVB U19 Championships and finished third at the 2025 CAVB Beach Volleyball Continental Senior Championships before completing their breakthrough with the 2026 African title.

Nigeria Volleyball Federation President Musa Nimrod described the Olympic qualification as a victory for the country. He praised the players, coaches and other members of the team for contributing to the landmark achievement.

The success has also attracted immediate attention from the National Sports Commission. Director General Bukola Olopade said the athletes would be integrated into the Elite and Podium Board training grant programme as Nigeria begins preparations for Los Angeles.

Olopade said the support is intended to provide the athletes with the resources and high-performance preparation required for major international competition. The move reflects the Commission’s focus on identifying athletes with the potential to deliver strong performances at the Olympic Games.

The qualification gives Mbah and Bawa an extended preparation period before Los Angeles 2028. Their immediate continental success now provides a foundation for more international competition, technical development and Olympic preparation.

The African championship also represents a wider breakthrough for Nigerian volleyball. With the Olympic ticket secured, attention will now turn to ensuring Mbah and Bawa have the support and competitive exposure required to make their historic appearance in Los Angeles count.
