Max Steinlechner claimed his first professional victory on Sunday with a thrilling one-shot win at the Mediclinic Invitational at Heron Banks Golf and River Resort. The Austrian golfer finished with a closing 66, securing a total of 24 under par, just ahead of South Africa’s Daniel van Tonder, who finished second with a 66 of his own, ending on 23 under par. Steinlechner’s birdie on the final hole sealed the win, and he expressed his gratitude for the invitation to the event and the support of his sponsors.
The final round was a tense affair, with both players tied at 23 under par as they reached the 18th hole. Steinlechner, who had started the day one shot ahead of Van Tonder, made a bogey on the 16th hole, allowing Van Tonder to catch up. However, Steinlechner’s birdie on the par-four 18th hole ultimately secured him the win, leaving Van Tonder with no opportunity to respond.
In third place, Jonathan Broomhead and Jacques Blaauw finished on 19 under par, while Yurav Premlall earned a share of fifth place, marking his second top 10 finish in his last four Sunshine Tour events. For Steinlechner, the win marked a significant milestone in his career, coming just a year after he left North Carolina State University in 2023 as Austria’s top-ranked amateur.
Steinlechner’s victory provides excellent momentum as he prepares for upcoming co-sanctioned events on the Sunshine Tour, starting with this week’s SDC Open at Zebula Country Club. Despite the loss, Van Tonder remains on track to reclaim the No 1 spot in the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, currently holding second place behind Shaun Norris.
