Matthieu Pavon made history last January by becoming the first Frenchman to win a PGA Tour event, claiming victory at the Farmers Insurance Open with a clutch 8-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole. This week, Pavon returns to San Diego to defend his title at the prestigious tournament, which begins Wednesday at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla. The Farmers Insurance Open is unique in using both the North and South Courses, with the South Course hosting the weekend's final rounds after a 36-hole cut.
Pavon, 32, finished with a 13-under-par 275 score in 2023, edging out Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard by just one stroke. He expressed his admiration for Torrey Pines, emphasizing that it is a true ball-striking course, unlike others where success is often determined by putting. "I love how intense and well-committed to the shots you have to be to perform well here," Pavon said, reflecting on why he became fond of the course during his first experience.
Having primarily played on the DP World Tour before earning his PGA Tour card, Pavon made an immediate impact last season. After his victory, he contended the following week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and secured third place at a rain-shortened US Open. With a solid rookie year under his belt, Pavon sees 2024 as a crucial confirmation season, especially as he targets a spot on Europe’s Ryder Cup team, a dream he has pursued since childhood.
This year's field includes several top names, such as World No. 4 Hideki Matsuyama, who leads the FedEx Cup standings. Other notable competitors include Tony Finau, Shane Lowry, Jason Day, and Max Homa. Day, a two-time winner of the event, expressed his loyalty to the San Diego area and the tournament, while Charley Hoffman, a San Diego native, will also be a contender after a strong finish at The American Express.
