Matthew Brennan Claims Third Vuelta a España Victory on Stage 11

Matthew Brennan continued his remarkable debut at the Vuelta a España by securing his third stage victory of the 2026 race on Wednesday. The 21-year-old Briton, riding for Visma-Lease a Bike, produced another dominant sprint in Lorca after benefiting from a perfectly timed lead-out from teammate Wout van Aert.

Brennan finished ahead of Bryan Coquard of Cofidis and Jordi Meeus of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, while Magnus Cort and Van Aert completed the top five. His latest success follows his earlier stage wins and makes him the first rider since Tadej Pogačar in 2019 to claim three stages on his debut Grand Tour.

The 153.8-kilometre route from Cartagena to Lorca was largely flat and appeared tailor-made for the sprinters. An early breakaway featuring Ethan Hayter was eventually brought back, while the peloton accelerated approaching the day's main climb and split into smaller groups before regrouping.

Mads Pedersen did not start the stage because of illness, removing one of the major sprint threats and further improving Brennan's prospects. Visma-Lease a Bike then controlled the decisive stages of the race, with Van Aert helping to position Brennan for the final sprint.

The finish in Lorca featured several tight turns and technical sections, but Brennan remained safely positioned before making his move toward the line. He opened enough of a gap to keep Coquard at bay and comfortably secure another impressive victory.

After crossing the finish, Brennan celebrated by holding up three fingers to mark his hat-trick. He credited Van Aert and the rest of his teammates for their commitment, praising the experience and quality within the Visma-Lease a Bike squad.

Enric Mas retained the red leader's jersey after a stage that brought no significant changes to the general classification. The race now shifts back toward the mountains, with Stage 12 offering a much tougher challenge.

Thursday's 166.6-kilometre stage from Vera to Calar Alto features five classified climbs, including the demanding Velefique double ascent and a summit finish at Calar Alto. The mountainous route is expected to move the focus away from the sprinters and back toward the general classification contenders.
