Matthew Brennan Claims Fourth Vuelta a España Stage Victory

Matthew Brennan continued his remarkable debut at the Vuelta a España by sprinting to victory on Stage 16 on Tuesday, securing his fourth stage win of the Grand Tour.

The 21-year-old Visma | Lease a Bike rider benefited from a perfectly timed lead-out from teammate Wout van Aert before powering across the finish line in Palos de la Frontera. Bryan Coquard finished second, with Vito Braet taking third.

Brennan celebrated by holding up four fingers after crossing the line, marking the four victories he has already achieved in his first Grand Tour appearance. The British rider had originally targeted just one stage win.

“It’s unbelievable, four victories here and the plan was for one,” Brennan said.

The 181.1-kilometre stage from Cortegana was expected to favour the sprinters, and the race unfolded accordingly on another hot day in southern Spain. A five-rider breakaway established an early lead, but the peloton gradually reduced the gap as the finish approached.

With around 23 kilometres remaining, the escapees were caught, setting up a mass sprint in Palos de la Frontera. Van Aert delivered Brennan into position before the British rider accelerated away from the field to claim a comfortable victory.

Van Aert has also won two stages at this year’s Vuelta, meaning Visma | Lease a Bike have now collected six stage victories in the race.

There was no change at the top of the general classification, with Spanish rider Enric Mas of Movistar retaining his two-minute, six-second advantage over Felix Gall. Primož Roglič sits another four seconds behind Gall.

The Vuelta continues on Wednesday with another opportunity for the sprinters. Stage 17 will cover 185 kilometres between Dos Hermanas and Seville and is expected to produce another fast finish.
