Matthew Brennan Claims First Vuelta Stage Win as Tadej Pogacar Keeps Red Jersey

British rider Matthew Brennan announced himself on his Grand Tour debut with a powerful sprint victory in Stage 2 of the 2026 Vuelta a España, while Tadej Pogacar retained the overall leader’s red jersey.

Brennan, riding for Visma-Lease a Bike, prevailed in the uphill finish in Manosque after a demanding route from Monaco. The 21-year-old finished ahead of Spain’s Pau Miquel, with Pogacar taking third and securing four bonus seconds.

The stage covered more than 200 kilometres and featured around 3,020 metres of climbing, making Brennan’s victory particularly impressive given the challenging terrain. His success also marked his first-ever stage victory in a Grand Tour.

Ethan Hayter had briefly threatened Pogacar’s position after joining an early breakaway and collecting six bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint. However, he was unable to remain with the leading group during the closing stages and ultimately lost significant ground.

Visma-Lease a Bike launched an aggressive move inside the final two kilometres when Wout van Aert attacked. Pogacar followed the Belgian, but their attempt was neutralised before the finish, allowing Brennan to launch his sprint and take advantage of the opportunity.

Brennan entered the race with the task of supporting Van Aert's ambitions for the red jersey, but he remained ready to contest the sprint if the plan failed. His victory ultimately delivered a major personal milestone on his first appearance at cycling's highest Grand Tour level.

Pogacar remains in control of the general classification, holding a nine-second advantage over Van Aert, while Brennan moved into third overall, 10 seconds behind the Slovenian.

The Slovenian remains the overwhelming favourite for overall victory as he attempts to complete his collection of Grand Tour titles. The race continues Monday with a mountainous 174km stage from Gruissan to Font-Romeu, providing the first major high-altitude test of the Vuelta.
