American golfer Matt McCarty produced a standout performance to take an unexpected lead at the Truist Championship in Charlotte before play was suspended due to bad weather.
McCarty carded an opening round of 63, finishing eight under par after a blistering display that included birdies on his final three holes. His putting was especially impressive, as he rolled in a combined 220 feet of putts, the highest total recorded in a single round this season.
Behind him, Northern Ireland star Rory McIlroy made a steady start in his first round since successfully defending his Masters title. The world number two, a four-time winner of this event, remained patient throughout a round filled with 17 consecutive pars before finishing with a late birdie to sit at one under par.
South Korea’s Sungjae Im was close behind at the time play was halted, standing just one shot off the lead with one hole remaining. However, heavy weather forced officials to suspend proceedings, leaving 20 players unable to complete their opening rounds.
England’s Harry Hall also impressed, joining a group tied for third after posting a five-under 66. His round featured six birdies and only one bogey at Quail Hollow.
Further back, fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood recorded a four-under 67, highlighted by an eagle on the 10th hole, while Alex Fitzpatrick also reached four under after an encouraging start following his recent tour qualification.
The Truist Championship, which has no cut, serves as the final event before the PGA Championship begins at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania next week. Play is expected to resume once weather conditions improve.
