Mathieu van der Poel Triumphs on Rain‑Soaked Stage 2 at Tirreno‑Adriatico

Posted : 10 March 2026

Dutch star Mathieu van der Poel of Alpecin‑Premier Tech sprinted to a thrilling victory on Stage 2 of the 61st edition of Tirreno‑Adriatico, as rain‑soaked gravel sectors reshaped the race dynamics and tested rider skill and resilience.

The 206 km route from Camaiore to San Gimignano featured challenging wet gravel roads in the final kilometres, prompting decisive attacks and splitting the peloton. Van der Poel broke clear with Mexico’s Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates‑XRG) and Italy’s Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull‑BORA‑hansgrohe), forming a leading trio that held off the chasers to the finish. In a three‑man sprint, the Dutchman timed his effort perfectly to take the win.

Del Toro’s strong ride earned him the overall race lead, taking over the coveted blue leader’s jersey from Filippo Ganna of INEOS Grenadiers, the Stage 1 time trial winner. Ganna had opened the event with a powerful individual time trial victory in Lido di Camaiore but finished over a minute down on Tuesday’s rain‑affected day.

The day’s gravel challenge also saw general classification contenders suffer setbacks. Matteo Jorgenson (Visma‑Lease a Bike) and Thymen Arensman (INEOS Grenadiers) crashed on slippery sectors, losing time and altering the overall general classification picture. Pellizzari held strong for third on the stage and remains near the GC podium, while veteran punchers and all‑rounders jostled for position across the field.

Stage 2’s results reflect the unpredictable conditions and highlight the importance of technical skill alongside raw power in this early‑season WorldTour contest. Riders now turn their focus to Stage 3 and beyond, with tactical battles and varying terrain still to come as the Race of the Two Seas unfolds toward the Adriatic coast.
