Mark Williams Becomes Oldest Winner of a Snooker Ranking Event with Xi’an Grand Prix Triumph

Posted : 13 October 2025

Mark Williams defeated Shaun Murphy 10–3 at the Xi’an Grand Prix, becoming the oldest winner of a snooker ranking event at 50.

Mark Williams made snooker history by defeating Shaun Murphy 10–3 in the final of the Xi’an Grand Prix, becoming the oldest player to win a ranking event at 50 years and 206 days.

The three-time world champion surpassed the previous record held by fellow Welshman Ray Reardon, who was 50 years and 14 days old when he won the Professional Players Tournament in 1982.

This victory marks Williams’ 27th ranking title, placing him just one behind Steve Davis (28) in the all-time list, while Ronnie O’Sullivan remains the leader with 41 ranking event wins. Remarkably, Williams has now won tour events across five decades, becoming the first player to claim titles in his teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s.

In the final, reigning Masters champion Shaun Murphy, 43, was aiming for consecutive ranking titles following his British Open triumph in Cheltenham last month. However, Williams dominated the opening session, capitalizing on any mistakes and taking control with ruthless precision.

Williams surged ahead by winning the first four frames, stealing the third and fourth with impressive contributions of 56 and 68 points, despite Murphy holding significant leads in both. A superb 127 break in frame eight, along with six earlier half-centuries, gave Williams a commanding 7–1 lead going into the concluding session.

He extended his advantage with a 122 break in the ninth frame. Murphy managed to win two frames in a row, narrowing the score to 8–3, but Williams closed out the next two frames on either side of the mid-session interval to secure a historic 10–3 victory, cementing his place among snooker’s all-time greats.
