Mark Selby Dominates Ali Carter 6-1 in Masters Opening Round

Posted : 14 January 2025

Mark Selby demonstrated his potential to claim the Johnstone's Paint Masters title with a dominant 6-1 win over Ali Carter in the opening round, marking his return to form. Selby, who has struggled to make it past the quarter-finals at Alexandra Palace since 2014, looked in top shape after impressing at the BetVictor Championship League, where he made six centuries in a single day.

In his match against Carter, he produced two centuries and three additional breaks over 50, showing that he is once again a serious contender.

Having enjoyed great success at the Masters from 2008 to 2014, including three wins and two finals appearances, Selby has been aiming for a deep run this year. The British Open champion from September, Selby is now determined to become the only player aside from Ronnie O'Sullivan and Stephen Hendry to win the prestigious tournament four times.

His victory over Carter puts him in line for a quarter-final clash with either Mark Allen or Si Jiahui on Thursday.

Selby started his match with a break of 62 to win the first frame, then claimed the second after a tactical safety exchange on the final brown. He stepped up his game in the following frames, firing a 108 and a 93 to establish a commanding 4-0 lead at the interval.

In the fifth frame, Carter seemed poised to mount a comeback but missed an opportunity to double a red to center, allowing Selby to regain control and eventually secure a 126 break to lead 5-1.

In the seventh frame, Selby completed his win with a composed 53 clearance. Reflecting on his performance, Selby admitted he felt edgy at the start but acknowledged the importance of winning the second frame, which gave him confidence.

He expressed satisfaction with his focus and composure, especially in front of a full house. Carter, on the other hand, struggled to find his rhythm and conceded, "Mark was very good and I was absolute rubbish," acknowledging Selby's ability to stifle his confidence.
