Mark Allen Advances to Johnstone's Paint Masters Quarter-Finals with Dominant Win

Posted : 16 January 2025

Mark Allen advanced to the quarter-finals of the Johnstone's Paint Masters with a commanding 6-2 victory over debutant Si Jiahui in London. The Northern Irishman showcased his experience and tactical prowess against China's 22-year-old rising star, who recently climbed into the world’s top 16.

Allen controlled the match at Alexandra Palace, using precise safety play and high-scoring breaks to secure his place in the next round, where he will face Mark Selby. All six players who have reached the quarter-finals so far are former champions, with matches set to include Judd Trump against Ding Junhui and Neil Robertson versus Shaun Murphy.

Allen, ranked world number four, entered the tournament with confidence after winning the Riyadh Season Snooker Championship in December. He demonstrated his sharp form with a century and several breaks over 70 during the match. After a drawn-out opening frame lasting 40 minutes, Allen edged ahead with a clever safety battle, but Si leveled with an impressive break of 103.

Allen regained control with runs of 111 and 70 to lead 3-1 at the interval. Although Si pulled one frame back with a 60, Allen responded strongly with a break of 94 and dominated the seventh frame. Si had an opportunity to extend the match in the eighth but faltered after scoring only six, allowing Allen to finish decisively with a break of 80.

Reflecting on the win, Allen praised his safety play and noted Si’s inexperience in critical moments, such as opting for a risky plant instead of a safer shot at 3-2. “He’s a talented player and not afraid of the big stage, but I had to make it tough for him,” Allen remarked.

The former champion emphasized his dedication to improving his game and expressed enthusiasm for facing Selby, hoping to replicate their close encounter from last year. Allen highlighted the significance of the Masters, calling it a prestigious event that features "the best of the best."
